The Curonian Spit (Kuršių Nerija) is known as the pearl of the Baltic Sea.

The sand stripe of 98 kilometers, washed by the Baltic Sea on the west and the Curonian Lagoon waters from the east, is a wonderful joint working of nature and human efforts. The current landscape of the Curonian Spit was formed by residents struggling with the inexorable wind and attempting to tame the sand carried by it. Because of this unique union of man and nature in shaping the landscape, the Curonian Spit was declared a national park and was included in the UNESCO World Heritage Site.

According to the legend, the spit was formed a long time ago by girl giant Neringa, who poured the sandy peninsula into the sea to protect the peaceful lagoon from the stormy sea and create an embankment for fishermen to live. Historians claim that the Curonian Spit was formed about 5000 years ago and more than a millennium ago this place was an active pagan centre. In the eighteenth century the rolling sand dunes buried many settlements. The Prussian government launched a massive reforestation of the Curonian Spit in the beginning of the nineteenth century. Today, most of its parts are green with forests that protect this wonderful natural formation.

The different habitats are home to rare species of insects, birds, and plants specific and typical for the place… You may have luck to meet the moos (the elk) - the biggest mammal of the Curonian Spit, or a cunning fox. Perhaps You will spot the lovely board youngsters or the graceful deer... The coastlines are important for migratory and wintering water birds. The Curonian Spit is famous for the largest breeding colony of great cormorants in Lithuania.

With its still drifting sand dunes, the sea side forests, the old fishermen villages and white sand beaches, where You can find some amber... the Curonian Spit is truly unique!
